Where are the best soccer leagues in the world? This is a very subjective question, but question that concerns many bettors. However, the question is not clear, as the best could mean a lot of different things to many different people.

How should you compare leagues to find the best soccer league in the world?

Are we talking about the players, the fans, the stadiums, the excitement of the matches or are we more concerned about the betting possibilities within the different leagues? If you’re like me and you’re more interested in the possibilities to find reliable Asian Handicap selections or other bets that are more likely within one league over another league, then you’re in the right place and you should keep on reading!

What makes a good league for betting purposes?

Consistency, consistency, consistency is the key for a good betting league. If you think about the best football teams in the world, we’re only ever concerned with consistency of their performance. Because, if a team can maintain a winning record over a long period of time, they will win more matches than they lose, and they will score more goals and therefore, win more games.

Similarities exist between different leagues

The soccer statistics database provides information about the different teams within the leagues and the different bets that are the most likely to be successful within the different global leagues. With all that said, we must still delve deeper to find the best information for long-term betting success.

How can we evaluate a league for betting?

Let’s look at overall performance across every league in aggregate to first understand the relationship between classic 1X2 performance, so we know the home win, draw and away win ratios. This will then give us an indication of the matches within each league and we can contrast the overall performance against the different individual league performance for betting purposes.

What’s the overall performance across all soccer leagues?

Home win, draw and away win pie chart

Total – 13324

H- 5972 (45%)

D- 3529 (26%)

A- 3823 (29%)

Goals Over 2.5 and Goals Under 2.5 pie chart

Total- 13324

GO25- 6524 (49%)

GU25- 6800 (51%)

Benchmark over soccer league performance?

The 1X2 pie chart shows that approximately, 45% home win and 26% away win and 29% draw, so we know that home teams have an advantage in football. However, the draw is another factor as the 1-1 score draw is the most frequent score line across the major European football leagues and should never be discounted.

This could make the start of an interesting score draw betting strategy for someone that takes the time to search the data and consider the statistical likelihood of a 1-1 score draw within any given match.

The GO25 data indicates that the goals over 2.5 (49%) and goals under 2.5 (51%) results are very even across the leagues, which may suggest there are likely to be leagues that display much larger than average results for the goals over and the goals under if you take the time to look through their historical results. It’s very unlikely that all leagues will display the same overall even distribution for the goals scored.

There are a few different options for bettors that want to make sure they’re covered from the goals scored bets perspective, as GO25 is a benchmark marked differently across the leagues, which we can use as a basis for checking each league within the soccer database.

If we check all the current leagues within the IWSB stats database, we can see the most interesting areas are highlighted within the table, below:

2018 Records: Goals Under 2.5, Goals Over 2.5, Home Win, Draw and Away Win

The table above shows that there are several leagues where the GU25, GO25 and 1X2 are above the combined average for 2018. This suggests there may have been several leagues where you could have secured an above average return if you monitored the statistics and understood where to place your money.

If you check the results you can see that the cells in red have been highlighted to identify the leagues where the results are above the average percentage. You can see that leagues such as the Primera B Nacional and the Primera Division in Argentina both have shown an above average Goals Under 2.5 record, which also indicates an above average number of draws within the same leagues. This could be significant, as the 1-1 score is most frequent score line throughout global football.

At a high-level it appears that leagues with above average number of games ending with over 2.5 goals translates to a high number of Away Wins or Home Wins within the same league.

Check out the table in detail, so you can view the outcome of 2018 and you can start planning for 2019 seasons and beyond.

What do we do with the data over the long-term?

We can now use this to explore the league with higher than the benchmark results in different areas, so if we check out the leagues that are 10% above the average and then look back through history to see how reliable the results are across historical selections, we can form an opinion about the consistency of results within a given league.

If we check out a league we can then see if the results are close, above or below the average for a given season and see if this can be modelled across a range of leagues.
