Betting Tips for Today's Football

Find more value in your next football bet. You could gain a betting edge by checking out the tips and stats for today's and tomorrow's fixtures...

According to a study made in 2017, the football betting industry was worth £1.4 billion with bookmakers earning profits in the range of £300 million. These values reflect how exciting this industry is. So, if you’re one who likes to take chances, you might also want to jump in.

But how profitable is football or, in general, sports betting? A study made in 2018 stated that around 14% of bets made were profitable, with a few people earning more than £10,000.

Before you get your hopes up, remember that losing money in football betting is still highly probable. Also, making more bets doesn’t actually equate to higher earnings.

Most people think that football betting is just like the lottery with the results highly dependent on chance. Although elements of chance still play a role, sports betting can be treated mathematically and scientifically. This is according to experts.

So, how do you increase your chances of earning a profit in football betting? Let’s take a look at 5 of the best books in sports betting.

We will be rating each book using these criteria:

Ease of Use – How easy it is for the ‘Average Joe’ to understand

Topic Organisation – How topics are organised and presented

Readers’ Reviews – How readers are finding the overall usefulness of the book

Value for Money – If the cost of the book is worth the content

Let’s start!

Book: Sports Betting for Dummies

We all have to start somewhere, right? And if you’re an absolute beginner, you need a sports betting guide that treats you like a toddler. That is exactly what the ‘Dummies’ books are for, and Sports Betting for Dummies is no different.

The ‘Dummies’ book series covers topics from baking to starting a business empire. Their books were written with newbies in mind, thus the word ‘dummies’ in the titles.

At $19.99 for a paperback copy or $9.99 for a Kindle Version, Sports Betting for Dummies might not discuss football betting exclusively. But, it’s a great book for those just starting with sports betting in general. Everything is explained in a manner that’s as simple as possible for the absolute beginner.

The book was written by Swain Scheps, an expert in the industry of sports betting, and is also a veteran sports bettor himself. He is a data and analytics expert based in Oregon.

Swain authored another “dummies” book titled Business Intelligence for Dummies. He made contributions to the book Casino Gambling for Dummies and also provided gaming instruction and advice to the travel series, Fodor’s Las Vegas.

Sports Betting for Dummies will teach you the basics like understanding point spreads, money lines, and odds. You can use the methods in this book to wager on basketball, football, baseball, or any other sport.

You’ll also learn how to gather and analyse data just like the pros and make sports betting profitable. This book is perfect for those who love talking about or watching sports.

Increase the odds of winning through handicapping approaches, popular bet types, and the math surrounding them. Sports Betting for Dummies can get you started on sports betting and it can also help you get to the next level.

Ratings:

Ease of Use: 5 Stars. This book is truly for the ‘dummies’ out there.

Topic Organisation: 4 Stars. There are topics here that may not be useful for the exclusively football bettors.

Readers’ Reviews: 5 Stars. The ‘dummies’ book series have always been a hit.

Value for Money: 4 stars. The book is a bit on the expensive side, especially the Kindle version.

Overall Rating: 4.5 Stars

The ultimate goal of every bettor is to beat the bookmaker. This applies to all forms of gambling - from the casinos to football betting.

If you’re looking for a fool-proof, quick-fix method, you will find none. Even the most profitable bettors always work on very tight margins and Football Betting Tips and Systems: 20 Simple Steps and Strategies could be the key to helping you get there!

That’s what Football Betting Tips and Systems: 20 Simple Steps and Strategies will teach you.

The book looks at different markets and guides you on which elements you should consider for each one. It will teach you how to see value where other bettors just see struggle.

The key is not to focus mainly on face value but digging deeper by combining human factors with statistics. There is a wide array of information and data available that can be used to find value even in congested markets.

Football Betting Tips and Systems: 20 Simple Steps and Strategies will teach you how to understand the statistics and combined with key information, help you make informed decisions. You’ll also learn how to exploit rising markets, and why some prices are shorter or longer.

The book discusses key information that bookmakers consider.  It also covers basic but essential concepts such as Expected Goals or xG, breaking down markets, and determining key factors that contribute a football match’s outcome. Learning these methods will help you get a better understanding of each football match.

The goal of the book is to provide you with a basic foundation on football betting and take advantage of the information available that will help you in making wise bets.

Book: Soccermatics: Mathematical Adventures in the Beautiful Game

Soccer and mathematics are hard to fit in a single sentence, and it’s even harder to fit in one word. But that’s just what Soccermatics: Mathematical Adventures in the Beautiful Game does.

The book was written by David Sumpter, an Applied Mathematics professor at the University of Uppsala located in Sweden. He runs the university’s Collective Behavior Research Group and somehow was able to link mathematics to the X’s and O’s of football.

Have you ever wondered why some players fail while others succeed? Is it because of their soccer prowess or lack thereof? If you want to understand Luis Suarez, Neymar, or Cristiano Ronaldo better, this book is worth a read. You’ll also appreciate the reasonable price.

Before you can win in football betting, you need to understand the sport’s inner workings. You might say it’s unpredictable. But with the use of mathematics, you will see order out of all the chaos.

50,000 football fans chanting the same line, and it all started with a single loudmouth who somehow decided to start taunting the opposition. This fan hype and contagious behaviour can be predicted and explained through math.

Sumpter will take you to the mathematical modelling world expressed wonderfully through the game of soccer. This sport is much more than a game and Soccermatics will show you why through various game theories.

Reading this book will make you see football with new eyes. This is because the sport is very mathematical, and is riddled with shapes, patterns, and numbers, according to the author.

Although the book doesn’t specifically focus on football betting, understanding the game itself through mathematics will help you get a better grip on how to predict the outcome of each match. This is a great book to augment your arsenal of football betting reads.

Ratings:

Ease of Use: 4 Stars. The book is not really for the faint-hearted, especially those who hate math. But if you’re a fan of numbers and statistics and how they relate to human behavior and actions, this book is for you.

Topic Organisation: 5 Stars. David Sumpter really knows his math and soccer because he presents both using an amusing and thought-provoking approach.

Readers’ Reviews: 4 Stars. Readers who rated the book low might not have expected the content. However, the book is really filled with useful content.

Value for Money: 4 stars. $13.54 for a paperback copy and $9.99 for the Kindle version can be quite pricey for some.

Overall Rating: 4.25 Stars

Book: Premier League Betting Models in Excel (2019/2020) (h2)
Imagine the Barcelona team without Lionel Messi or Virgil van Dijk unable to play for Liverpool. While their respective teams will still be favoured to win against their lesser skilled opponents, the key players’ absence can still make the market less certain. Premier League Betting Models in Excel examines these situations throughout the book and makes you think about your next steps.

That’s because the star players’ impact on the game is quite easy to assess, and it can be done even by novice bettors. But what about the other players with lesser calibre? Surely, the absence of any player in the team will have an impact on the team’s overall performance, right?

That is what Premier League Betting Models in Excel will teach you. The author, Martin Chamberlain, discusses a modelling technique based on the perceived capabilities of players to help recreational bettors assess the strength of a given team during a match.

There aren’t many reliable sources that are focused on novice football bettors. This book presents a ratings-based modelling system with the use of Microsoft Excel. It is not just intuitive and simple to use, but it is also quite statistically sound.

Statistics is something that you can’t learn overnight and as an eager novice bettor, you might not want to pour in the required time and effort to master the discipline. Premier League Betting Models in Excel acts as the mediator between the regular bettors and the world of prediction algorithms and statistical models.

Ratings:

Ease of Use: 5 Stars. With only 61 pages, there is nothing in this book that is meant to confuse the novice bettor in you. The database and the Excel modelling are all you need.

Topic Organisation: 5 Stars. The book practically just has 3 chapters. However, these chapters are enough to get you started. You’ll be doing statistical modelling without even realising it.

Readers’ Reviews: 5 Stars. Readers just love the way statistical modelling is presented, as well as the wealth of information contained in the book.

Value for Money: 4 stars. $9.99 for the Kindle is a bit on the pricey side, better get the printed version at $17.99 instead.

Overall Rating: 4.75 Stars

Book: Good Teams Win, Great Teams Cover: An Underdog's Tale of Life, Gambling and Sharp Sports Betting

Sports bettors need role models and inspirations, too. And the author of the book, Good Teams Win, Great Teams Cover: An Underdog's Tale of Life, Gambling and Sharp Sports Betting, is a good one.

If you want an entertaining book on sports betting that you can still use to improve your chances of turning in a profit, this one is for you. The book is a quick, easy, and decent read for those who are looking for motivation.

The author himself is a professional bettor, or gambler as he admits. He is pouring out his proven techniques and personal experiences into this book to help the novice bettors. And since this is intended for the novice and recreational bettors, no analytic or mathematical approach were used here.

Good Teams Win, Great Teams Cover’s handicapping is a bit dated, though. It might have been particularly useful in the 90’s, but not for this era. Written by Pat Hagerty, the book is a treasure trove of his past experiences in sports betting, and the techniques he finds most useful.

Although it doesn’t focus specifically on football, the bits of advice and the methods used by the author can be used with any sport. The personal touch is what gives this book an edge over the other sports betting books out there. You will read a lot of anecdotes about Pat’s life and the choices he has made that has led him to abundant success.

He explains the basics of sports betting in a way that inspires the casual bettor to learn more about the game.

Ratings:

Ease of Use: 5 Stars. The book is a very light read and quite entertaining. All topics are explained clearly.

Topic Organisation: 5 Stars. With 25 chapters starting on how to pick games and ending on putting all the techniques together, it’s a great read for someone new in sports betting.

Readers’ Reviews: 5 Stars. This is one of the highest rated books in sports betting.

Value for Money: 5 Stars. $9.99 for Kindle and $11.99 for paperback. It’s a steal.

Overall Rating: 5 Stars

A final word on sports betting books

There is a lot of books out there on sports betting - from the very simple to the ones that discuss big data sources. As a novice football bettor, you might want to start light, and these 5 books can help you get a good head start.

Good luck!
