BTTS or Both Teams to Score is as simple and straightforward as it sounds. The betting market is only concerned with the final score line and only if both teams have scored at least one goal. So, any score line including nil (i.e. zero home goals or zero away goals) will result in you losing your wager.
Alternatively, within the same betting market, you could choose the No Bet for Both Teams to Score, which means you believe only one team will score all the goals within the fixture.
The Both Teams to Score betting market is very interesting and one of the most popular football bets and as you can imagine, it’s easy to understand for most sports bettors.
Is there a good reason to choose Both Teams to Score above other bets
I’m quite open about my preference to place bets with the most popular and easy to understand betting markets, but you must choose interesting and unique bets within those betting markets.
The issue with many punters (especially recreational punters), is that they often place bets within markets with little to no liquidity (i.e. few bettors are placing bets, resulting in low wagers within the betting market). This means there are fewer opportunities for bookmakers to balance each side of the bet.
The low liquidity markets usually translate to less attractive odds for bettors and sometimes an unrealistic opportunity to receive betting profits over the long term.
That’s why choosing to back the more popular BTTS selections means you may have a more realistic possibility to return profits, if your estimation of your betting edge and overall value can be accurate over the long-term.
Both Teams to Score is good for beginners and experienced punters
The fact you don’t have to monitor individual score lines, specific goal scorers or the total number of goals scored makes BTTS bets simple.
You’re only concerned about the requirement for BOTH of the teams to score, so if one team is losing by several goals, you only need to know, if the losing team is capable of scoring a goal, rather than trying to work out which team will score the next goal or the player that will earn their next goal scoring bonus.
I’m talking about a far easier route to placing bets and understanding how your bets are doing across your betting portfolio. Isn’t this craved by most sports bettors? So, you can see why BTTS bets could be an interesting addition to your portfolio.
Quick bet settlements and sometimes faster pay outs
You can check the betting pay out guide or the betting calculator; both will provide an easy view of the returns and profits, which you could return from placing bets against different odds. It’s worthwhile experimenting with the betting calculator, so you understand how this type of bet can provide a simplistic approach to placing bets over the long term.
Additionally, there is an advantage for Both Teams to Score bets in terms of cashflow, as your bet will usually be settled as soon as both teams have scored, which is before the end of the match. This means that you can quickly realise gains during the match, as your betting return will be automatically calculated and immediately returned. Therefore, freeing up your funds, which can be directed towards your bankroll for the next bet.
What’s the best way to find value within BTTS bets?
I thought about realistic methods to anticipate goal scoring matches before placing bets. Are there specific factors within team performance or in-play stats, which can determine if a game will result in both teams scoring?
That’s when I thought about key team performance metrics and how the football form guide for different teams could affect the outcome of soccer matches and therefore, goals scored/conceded and therefore, Both Teams to Score (BTTS) bets.
Is there a specific pre-match profile or statistic, which points to goal scoring games?
This is not quite so easy. You must review the data from a betting perspective and identify if we can determine influencing stats or factors behind a good choice for a goal scoring match, we don’t need to find a specific high goal scoring game, we just need to find opportunities where both teams are likely to score.
What could affect the number of goals scored within a match?
There could be a lot of things, but the four main points, which come to mind are attack strength (i.e. offensive strength), defensive strength, goals scored, and goals conceded. Without looking at the data we could assume teams with a high attack strength and goals scored and low defensive strength and high goals conceded would be likely to score and concede goals.
This could be something to review within the football form guide and the statistics pages for specific leagues where you want to drill down and understand if their attack and defensive performance will suggest goal scoring matches.
You can gain a lot from the first stats table presented within each individual team stats page and match stats page. When you see the following tables:
Liverpool Match Stats from Soccer Statistics
Manchester City Match Stats from Soccer Statistics
The example from the stats page indicate the recent performance for Manchester City and Liverpool within the English Premier League. It’s quite straightforward to see the attack and defensive strength based on the number of goals presented for both teams and the relative home and away match ratings, which is also based on the recent performance.
What other data can you use to help select BTTS bets?
We can take a look at that the number of games played home and away for each team within a specific league to identify if they experience more games where both teams score.
For example, if you review the different matches within the English Premier League from the 2018/2019 season and create a table of the different home and away teams and workout the percentage of matches where both teams have scored. This will give you a couple of tables, as shown below.

Take your time to review the BTTS stats, as this will help you to make better bets throughout the season when you know the performance of each of the different teams. Hopefully, this is some help and you can see how different teams are likely to play their part within matches where both teams have scored goals. The significant point to remember is the difference between the home and the away performance.
We plan to add this data into the soccer statistics database, so you can make better comparative judgements on BTTS bets for each of the different teams within the leagues.
