Betting Tips for Today's Football

Find more value in your next football bet. You could gain a betting edge by checking out the tips and stats for today's and tomorrow's fixtures...

Betting involves money and even if you’re betting for recreation or a more serious pursuit.

You need to understand how to be good at betting and efficiently make more of your soccer selections with straightforward, but important betting strategies, which can leverage sensible betting positions that benefit your bankroll.

Football is as predictable as the weather…

This statement acknowledges that even though it is very much possible to predict soccer games, there is always the potential for a shock result to pop out of every game, no matter how seemingly straightforward.

The effect of randomness on soccer matches

Soccer, more than most other sports, is highly affected by randomness.

There are more than a few variables that, while foreseeable, must all come together to fulfill a positive outcome. It is this factor that will determine how long it will take for you to learn how to improve your soccer betting.

If you were to review the betting accounts of even the most experienced punters, the number of wins is by and large eclipsed by the number of losses. Yet these punters can produce a significant profit over the long-term. How do they do this?

They use data and information to find the best value and the best betting strategies to help their bankroll over the long-term. Making more money from football is not necessarily winning big money.

The real aim is to have a consistent long-term betting performance.

You do not want your betting results to be widely up and down, instead you want to have a relatively smooth profit line/curve.

The profit line does not have to be steep (signifying massive profits), but a steady and a consistent increase, which demonstrates your betting is likely to pay off over the long-term with careful and sensible selections.

Monitoring long-term Return on Investment

Return on Investment (ROI) should not only be measured on a weekend basis, but over the course of a longer period. Typically, 30 days, 90 days, 180 days or a year.

Using a defined number of days means you’re comparing identical time periods, rather than a short month, such as February with a longer 31-day month.

The key is to maintain a sensible outlook and ensure a brief loss and dip in ROI is assessed over a defined period. This will quickly identify if your betting approach is working or losing you money over the long-term.

Maintaining betting profitability is not easy. Following the betting tips and tricks within the coming sections provide more examples where you can improve your betting and carve a soccer betting niche where you can gain more betting intelligence and experience than the average punter.

•    Diversification
•    Handicapping
•    Combinations
•    Accumulators (Accas)
•    Increasing Stakes

Diversify from basic 1X2 bets

It’s all well and good being able to predict that the home or away team wins, but you need to have more in your repertoire of betting tricks and tips to profit over the long-term.

Modern bookmakers offer many soccer betting options, some of which are safer/easier to predict than the popular 1X2 market. More importantly, they offer better odds and therefore bigger profits for the punter.

Always look deeper into the statistics

Consider markets like Goal-Goal/No Goal, Goals Over/Goals Under, Half-time/Full-time, etc.

Picture a matchup where a big, strong home team is matched against a less fancied, smaller team. Often, the home team wins that contest by substantially outscoring the opponent, but the odds offered in 1X2 are often very low.

If you feel confident about the home team winning such a contest comfortably, consider Goals Over/Goals Under providing the information within the soccer statistics database can justify that opinion.

Instead of getting, say, 1.11 odds for a home win, you could get 1.38 for an Over 2.5 goals bet. And, in the rare event where the away side, playing without pressure due to their underdog tag, manages to hit back against the favorites, your bet would still be fulfilled by scorelines such as 2-1 to either side or 2-2 draw.

This is an example, but a reason for you to review the different options before placing your bets, so you can study the selections and betting options over time.

Handicapping

If you fully expect a home win by an avalanche of goals (think scorelines such as 4-0, 5-0 or 6-1 etc.), a Handicap is something else you could try. If you Handicap your home side even by just a goal, you’re sure to get significantly improved home win odds.

You could even Handicap by two or three goals for an even higher profit but since being cautious is also a vital aspect of how to be good at betting, only go that far if you’re confident enough.

The table above shows how often teams when they play away from home. This shows that handicapping an away team should only happen when you’re certain of the form, the trends and the statistics, which can be justified with data and not opinion.

Increase your winning amounts with combos

A combo bet is where you predict a combination of two or sometimes more outcomes from one match. Combos are a highly effective method of getting more money out of your winning bets.

They are also an exciting way to reward yourself for having that extra bit of football knowledge and the next natural step for a semi-experienced punter.

Some popular combo examples are Winner + Number of Goals, Winner + Both Teams to Score and Total goals + Both Teams to Score. An example of a three-part combo is 1X2+Goals Over/Goals Under 2.5+ and Goal-Goal/No Goal.

The more the parts the riskier the combo bet, of course, but with greater risk comes greater reward.

The interesting thing about combos is that, often, one correct outcome leads to the second or third outcomes.

Depending on what you know about the away team, and if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you might consider predicting whether or not they might nick a goal in reply or not.

This is where you should stop; close your browser, shut your laptop or exit your app. Trying to win money over the long-term involves a stable betting mindset, which encourages detailed review of the selections and data.

That would lead you to an even more rewarding albeit riskier combo bet with an additional Goal-Goal/No Goal part.

Use Accumulators (Accas)... But Tactfully

Accumulators, are very poor for sustained profits over the long-term, but a sin can provide a significant profit. As you know, I’m not a great fan of accumulators, but their very popular, so here’s a quick lowdown.

The best time to use an acca

Knowing how and when to use Accas is a key part of knowing how to be good at betting, specifically soccer betting. Accas make sense for a low-stake punter, who wants to leverage their small stake to a much larger return. However, the odds and statistical likelihood are the same irrespective of your stake size!

They are a superb way to make more of your soccer betting because rolling the winnings and stake from one successfully predicted match to the next allows you to instantly multiply your small stake.

Experienced punters with good league knowledge and information about teams opt for an Acca instead.

Three or four strong home teams would give you 1.2*1.2*1.2*1.2*Your Low Stake which is a much more profitable (and more and more unlikely) given the number of selections than the single-bet option.

Increasing Stakes

This should not be approached lightly, and you should never bet more than you can afford.

Obviously, increasing your stakes would provide a larger return, but higher stakes should be related to a tactical and a planned approach concerning a specific percentage of your bankroll.

Commonly, experienced sports bettors use anywhere between 2% and 5% of their bankroll, which means that any losing sequence is unlikely to cause a total loss.

However, increasing the stake without a plan and a justifiable reason can seriously threaten your bankroll, so this should always be approached with caution and it should never endanger your financial well-being.

What’s the best way for you to get started?

Firstly, consider more markets, use Handicaps, Combos, Accas, increasing your stake following careful review of betting statistics and only when the situation allows it!

Good Luck!
