You may be thinking what the Irish lottery has to do with football/soccer?
You would be excused for thinking that we’re starting to diversify away from football and look at a range of different betting options, but lotteries are something that many people play and sometimes it’s good to have a different perspective on betting and games of chance.
So, we’ve tried to look at why playing a traditional national lottery is always a bad bet and now this post will provide some information, which could help you to make a better betting decision when you’re tempted to bet a lottery.
If you’re going to place a bet against any lottery, I would suggest you consider the Irish lottery and use bookmakers rather than the real main draw. Using bookmakers helps you to improve your odds across the possible selections, although you’re not able to win the main jackpot prize, you may still enjoy improved odds and a better betting probability.
So, you’re excluded from the massive jackpot, but vastly improving your lottery betting odds over the smaller pay outs, which may be more attractive for a range of bettors.
How does the Irish lottery work?
This Irish lottery is like most lotteries, such as UK and Euromillions lottery draws, but the Irish lotter has a few key differences.
At the time of writing the Irish lottery contains 6 numbered balls and a bonus ball, which correspond with prize money associated with the number of people playing the game each week.
You’re required to choose numbers, but you can choose how many numbers you would like to match on each line. This means you can manually increase your odds of winning, but you understand this also reduces your possible pay out, as choosing to match 3 numbers would obviously pay out less money than correctly matching every number.
The player completes their lottery slip with different lines and then decides how much money they want to wager against each of the different lines.
Therefore, someone could play multiple lines at low odds by choosing many different combinations numbers on each line and only choosing to match 3 numbers with each of their picks.
Therefore, independently finding a way to improve the statistical probability of winning the lottery and icreasing your lottery expected value.
How can bookmakers offer better Irish lottery odds?
Playing the Irish lottery with bookmakers can improve your betting odds because you’re not part of the main draw AND you only need to match 5 numbers to win the top prize. This may seem attractive for most, but this comes with its own concerns.
What does this mean for your money?
This means your money is not part of the main Irish lottery draw, as you’re only taking part in the bookmakers’ competition.
This means you’re betting against pre-determined odds for each draw rather than playing alongside the millions of lottery players.
What odds are available with the Irish lottery and bookmakers?
Comparing the Irish lottery win odds and the bookmakers’ lottery games, is very similar to comparing 6 numbers plus one bonus ball (total of 7 numbers) to only 5 numbers.
You must choose if the bonus ball should be included within your bet. Therefore, increasing your potential bookie pay out, by increasing the probability of matching 5 numbers while decreasing your likelihood of winning at the same time.
The different winning combinations provide different pre-determined odds, as the table below demonstrates:
|Lottery Balls|| Irish Lotto Odds|| Real Odds|| Real Decimal Odds|| Bookmaker Decimal Odds|
| N/A|| 6/1|| 7.00|| N/A|
| N/A|| 60/1|| 61.00|| N/A|

What are the positives and negative of the Irish lottery?
As described above, there are good points and bad points...
On the positive side; you have the chance to improve your odds, but on the negative side you cannot win the jackpot, as you’re not entered in to the main competition.
Ultimately, you must make the best decision for yourself, but if you’re going to play any lottery, which will have an awful expected value given the risk, you should try to improve your odds, so using your favourite online bookmaker could be a realistic option.
Finally, do not expect to increase your bankroll by relying on the national lottery. The national lottery is just that…a lottery and it can never be used as anything more than a bit of fun.
Just remember, the winning jackpot odds for any lottery are always extremely high and it’s very unlikely that you will win anything significant or even get close to winning the main lottery prize, either within the full lottery draw, or as part of a bookmakers’ own lottery game.
